The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag of the United States. Included in these rules is guidance regarding the proper disposal of U.S. flags which are unfit for display. The preferred method for disposal (known as retirement) is burning.
A formal retirement ceremony will take place at CCFD Station 52 starting at 3:30 p.m. on Flag Day, Friday, June 14, 2024. Flag Day is observed on June 14 to honor and commemorate the adoption of the American flag which occurred on this day in 1777 by the Second Continental Congress.
At the formal U.S. flag retirement ceremony conducted by Carson City Fire Department and Carson City Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), dignitaries, veterans, and other guests will witness a ceremonial burning of a U.S. flag, in honor of our country and what our flag stands for.
